Sheila Whittaker
Sheila is a classically trained professional
violinist & musician - she studied at the Royal College of Music
in London & graduated with a GRSM degree & ARCM violin teaching
diploma. For nearly twenty years she had a thriving career in the
mainstream classical music world, freelancing with many orchestras
& chamber groups including the Royal Ballet & the Castalian
Duo, & running a teaching practise alongside her performing
work.
Some years ago Sheila attended a talk on Sound Healing & realised
it was time to use her musical abilities in a different way for
more direct healing purposes. Various "coincidences" &
synchronicities led her to study with Simon Heather, principal of
the College of Sound Healing, with whom she completed her basic
Sound Healing training several years ago. At this time she was also
drawn to learn Reiki & completed her traditional Reiki Master
training in 2004 with Hjalmar Jonsson, one of the founder members
of the Reiki Association.
Another series of synchronicities led to her meeting world-renowned
Gongmaster Don Conreaux & discovering the Gong & its' awesome
healing power. Sheila studied with Don & continues to work closely
with him; she also works with Aidan McIntyre, singing bowl Master
& Don's musical assistant. Sheila has specialised in the use
of the Gong for Sound Therapy; she also uses master quality old
Himalayan singing bowls, bells, tuning forks, violin & overtoning
when required for her therapy sessions & performances. She has
recorded a Gong CD - "Transcendence - a Cosmic ocean of Sound".
Another Gong CD - "Quantum Transformations - a Journey into
Timelessness" is in the process of being produced, a collaboration
with Aidan McIntyre. Sheila is a member of the UK Sound Healers
Association & a tutor for the College of Sound Healing, &
was for two years Chairperson for the College. She teaches the "Sound
Healing with Gongs" & "Chant & Mantra" workshop
modules for the College Sound Healing training. Sheila also gives
workshops & private lessons in Gong & other aspects of Sound
Healing when needed.
Sheila currently runs a fortnightly chanting group - Voicemagic
- in central Brighton on Wednesday evenings, & is a key member
of Jayadeva Chanting group with tabla player Gavin Bates & singer
Helen Reynolds. She gives a twice-monthly Gongbath session on Thursday
evenings at her home in Newhaven. She is also a member of Brighton-based
East/West fusion band IndigoEye in which she plays violin, Gongs
& harmonium, & sings.
