Concert Meditation with Shakuhachi

Come and be bathed in the tranquil, haunting sounds of the Shakuhachi -
an ancient bamboo flute used in Japan by Zen monks as an aid to meditation.
You will hear a range of pieces, from the traditional repertoire of the Zen monks,
to folk tunes, and modern compositions.

The concert will also incorporate Tibetan Bowls, Gongs and Xylophones
to facilitate a deeply healing sound experience.
You are encouraged to bring a cushion and blanket
so you can lie down and relax fully
whilst the healing sounds wash over you.

Sound has long been understood to be a powerful tool for healing and deep relaxation.
Come and be immersed in an ocean of sound.
Relax whilst every cell of your body is massaged and soothed by the power of sound.

I use a range of instruments
including gong, Tibetan bowls, xylophone,
Japanese flute, bells, shruti and more
to ensure a wide sound spectrum experience.

These sessions can help to:
Induce deep relaxation, tranquillity and calm;
Promote physical, mental and emotional healing;
Reduce pain; Increase ability to handle stress;
Detoxify the body; Increase mental alertness / awareness and energy;
Lower blood pressure.

Please bring a yoga mat, small pillow and a blanket
so you can lie down and relax fully during the session.

These short sessions are designed for those who wish
to find a quiet time during the day to sit and reflect
in a beautiful sacred space,
whilst the sounds of the shakuhachi echo softly around.

The sessions are not led, but are simply a chance for you
to sit for a time and allow the sounds to soothe your soul.

There is no charge for these sessions
(although admission to Glastonbury Abbey is required
for the Abbot's Kitchen events),
and people are welcome to stay for all or part of the time.

The Story of the Shakuhachi

This concert, embellished with historical details and anecdotes,
charts the evolution of this ancient Japanese Bamboo flute,
from its humble origins with the Zen monks,
via folk and ensemble music,
to its incorporation into the contemporary music of today,
both in Japan and in the West.

This simple bamboo flute, with its haunting and evocative sound,
has the power to captivate and enthral.
